Jordan Smith of The Austin Chronicle published compelling articles in March and May 2002 about the case of Rodney Reed, who is on Texas' Death Row despite a strong case for innocence.
Rodney Reed was convicted of killing Stacy Stites in 1998 and sentenced to death. The prosecution was able to put on medical evidence that seemed to show that Reed raped and murdered Stites. It was the only physical evidence connecting him to the crime. But his defense did not offer any counter medical evidence, despite the fact that there was a simple explanation for the biological evidence found on the victim - Reed and Stites had a consensual relationship.
The facts become even more questionable when it is revealed that Stites, a white woman, may have been cheating on her fiance with Reed, a black man. Adding to the controversy, Stites' fiance was a police officer. These issues were neither fully investigated nor fully presented to the jury. Now Reed is on death row, and attempting to appeal his death sentence. His family needs our help.
Reed and his supporters insist that he is innocent, and at least one experienced medical examiner has discovered nagging questions about the medical evidence presented.
